36 million journeys are made using Oyster each week (bus, Tube, DLR, Tramlink and National Rail)

Oyster card project

In 1998, work started on one of the most exciting transport projects ever seen in London. From an unassuming brief to improve ticketing across London, TranSys developed a system which transformed travel for millions of Londoners, giving rise to one of the most successful brands of the new millennium.

London's Oyster card is the jewel in the crown of an integrated ticketing system designed, implemented, managed and marketed by the TranSys consortium in partnership with Transport for London (TfL).

The contract for the project, titled PRESTIGE, was awarded in 1998 to the TranSys consortium which has invested £192 million in it. The principal partners of the consortium are EDS (Electronic Data Systems) and Cubic Transportation Systems. The smartcard system went live in November 2002 when the Oyster brand was launched and the first cards were made available to 80,000 staff.
